Being the closest neighbour of the horse race track I have been seeing horses every day for my entire life. Up until now I've had a chance of riding a horse exactly once and even then I have vehemently turned down the opportunity. My reason was the hight of the horse and my weight which was closer to the weight of the horse rather to the weight of an average man. Never have I regretted my decision. Then it happened. My brother asked me if I could help him with photographing horse riding, a service he is adding to his holiday house renting (check it out at www.podhamer.si). My idea of taking photos of horses was me on foot running around with cameras in my hand and around my neck. Fast forward to yesterday for when the "event" was scheduled. We've met with men who are going to lead horses in Središče ob Dravi, a small town near the Drava River. They've had four horses all saddled up and ready, but I was still convinced that being on foot is the way to go (despite my weight now being "ideal", but the hight of the horses being higher, at least through my eyes). I've taken my brother's car and drove as far as I could with a car. Then it was over. We've come to the river into which I've trod knee deep. I've had no other choice.

Listening to the instructions from the nice man who was helping me mount Polona - trotter race champion mare, many different pictures ran through my brains. Well, the rest was a joy. Nothing's gotten wet, I haven't fallen off Polona, I haven't broken anything despite mounting and dismounting Polona many times. The route we have ridden has taken us over the banks of the river, over and along the river-bed, through the forest and over the fields. It was such an amazing experience that it cannot be simply described with words. We have seen many different species of birds, fish, skeleton of an otter, traces of beavers and other wild animals. We couldn't have seen all of this in one day any other way that on a horse. These magnificent animals are powerful, dexterous, playful and very helpful. They were enjoying the ride as well as we were. All in all an experience I want to repeat many more times. And last but not least, my trusty X-pro2 with Fujinon 55-200 and Samyang 12mm did an excellent job.
