Slow and dark stillness of The STILL

The STILL is an interesting collaboration of four musicians from Australia, Canada and Germany with an unconventional mix of the piano, contrabass, electric guitar and the drums. The Still are Steve Heather on the drums, Chris Abrahams on the piano, Derek Shirley on the contrabass and Rico Repotente on the guitar. As is the mix of instruments a bit strange, the name THE STILL more or less suits them. At least for the first half of the gig. At some point it looked like you cannot play the drums or the piano any slower and darker. Then at the middle of the gig they turned everything upside down. They were fast, they were energetic, they were everything else but dark and they were awake. The last part of the concert was again a bit slower and there was even a bit of melody. The audience loved the way they picked their compositions as did I. It was almost like a rollercoaster ride. You start a bit slow, then there is a very fast descent and you again end with a slow ride to the end.

What surprises me almost every time I attend a gig of musicians like these is how easy it is for them to do it. It almost looks like everybody could do it. And at another point you can for sure experience the mastery of these musicians. All in all a gig to remember. As Steve said if you want to remember live music, you can buy a record.

The gig venue was appropriately lit so I had a really hard time getting enough light for the photos. I tried my XF35mm, XF90mm and XF55-200mm. At the end the 55-200mm proved to be the best choice no matter the aperture not being as bright as the other, but it has a very useful OIS. I did manage to get some keepers and here they are:
